On Monday, Jan. 27, 20 Blue Creek fifth graders from Mrs. Poskanzer’s class were honored at the Board of Education meeting for their regular assistance with kindergarten students during lunch time.

“It can be pretty crazy in the cafeteria and a lot of the time the kindergarten students need some help,” Blue Creek Principal Annette Trapini said. “So, I decided to enlist the help of some of our fifth grade students who have been instrumental in making the younger students feel safe, cared for and loved.”

Not only do the fifth grade students sit and talk with the younger students, but they also circulate the cafeteria to help the kindergarteners wash their hands, open milk and other packages and get them anything they forgot like napkins or utensils.

A special thank you to the following fifth grade students who were recognized:

Bravo to all contestants! Congratulations, Charles! This school competition moderated by Mrs. Rebecca Coffey, fourth grade Loudonville Elementary teacher, is the first round in the annual National Geographic GeoBee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography, but also ancient and world civilizations, cultures and physical features.

The National Geographic Society developed the GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, more than 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee. School champions, including Charlie, will take an online qualifying test; up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state then become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee. The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the GeoBee national championship in Spring 2020. Shaker High School senior Kyla Mansfield was recently recognized for her award winning artwork in the 24th Annual Black History Month Creative Expression Contest. Kyla originally created a piece of art, titled “Black Lives Matter,” for her graphic design class. The students were asked to create a logo for a water bottle using a current event and Kyla chose the Black Lives Matter movement. When she heard about the contest from another teacher, Kyla decided to alter her original piece by removing the water bottle and letting the artwork speak for itself.

“My artwork is supposed to show the diversity among the black community and to suggest that we should be accepting of all people,” Kyla said. “My artwork was created to show the diversity of people in the Black Lives Matter movement. The first female and male shown are supposed to represent the black individuals who stand out from the rest of the stereotypical black culture. The next girl shows the idea that a Muslim or any other religion should have the power and freedom to fight for the cause. The last girl reinforces that the Black Lives Matter movement is made up of many different people.”

Kyla was honored at a reception at the New York State State Museum on Sunday, Feb. 2.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, district officials were made aware of an alleged incident at Shaker High School involving cell phone use in a restroom. A student stated he was in a bathroom stall when he noticed the person in the next stall trying to videotape him with a cellphone held under the stall divider. The student also stated that he saw some flashes from the cellphone and believed them to be attempts at photos. The student immediately notified the school district administration who notified the district’s school resource officer, who is a member of the Colonie Police Department. After an investigation, the Colonie Police Department determined that a substitute teacher was responsible for the incident. The substitute teacher was subsequently arrested by Colonie police. Shaker High School holds 10th annual Catwalk for a Cause

Group photo of all catwalk participantsEarlier this winter, Shaker High School held its 10th annual Catwalk for a Cause, a fashion show run by students and community members. Each year, this event raises money for a cause chosen by the event coordinators. The chosen organizations are often personally related to the catwalk coordinators. The funds raised at this year’s event will support research, education and advocacy for those living with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

The event co-chairs, senior Lana Mohammad and junior Eva Hymes, worked tirelessly to plan and direct various committees of approximately 100 students. The participating students included artists, musicians, athletes, best buddies and other school groups who receive clothing donations from local stores for students to wear on stage. Without their generous donations, Catwalk for a Cause wouldn’t be possible.

A unique aspect of the event is the variety of cultural representation from the students. Mansi Patel and Aaminah Afzal were compelled to lead the international theme this year because they feel it gives the audience a chance to see a variety of cultures. “It can be fun for the participants because most of them don’t get to wear their cultural clothing in their everyday lives and this event gives them a chance to show off their cultural fashion,” Mansi said.

Along with the international theme, Key Club went with an environmental theme which allowed students to raise awareness. The club members were inspired by a recent push for more sustainable fashion. One of the stylists, Izzy Cowan, says that fast fashion isn’t necessary for aesthetics. “Thrifted fashion is not only cheaper and more environmentally-friendly given that it reuses items instead of sending them to the landfill and preventing more from being produced, it is also a great way to acquire just as incredible pieces for styling.” The group collaborated with art students to create pieces from old fabric and recycled materials. Other items were obtained from thrift stores like the Salvation Army.

Student Government Administrator Lisa Morgan says this event is an amazing way for students to develop organizational skills and learn how to work together in order to succeed. “The event is fantastic because it is 100 percent student run and organized; the skills that all of the participating students use are very important and allow students to get ahead on learning how to organize in adulthood,” Morgan said. “Whether it be to have a fun time with friends, represent a specific organization or cause, or express cultural unity, students love the event and work hard to contact stores and execute the show of their dreams – all while learning along the way.”

A special thank you to this year’s supporters: Rue 21, Futia’s Formal Wear, Tuxego of Latham, Xena’s Bridal, Great Finds Thrift Boutique, Loft, Darn Good Yarn, Jocelyn’s, Salvation Army and Plato’s Closet.

Letter from Superintendent Corr about the coronavirus

        Dear parents and guardians:

While the North Colonie Central School District does not have a confirmed case of COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in our schools, we are aware of concerns in the community about the spread of this relatively new virus.

The district is closely monitoring this fluid situation and following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), Albany County Department of Health and the New York State Education Department.

Based on recent reports, COVID-19 is not actively circulating in New York state at this time. If the district becomes aware that a student or staff member is diagnosed with COVID-19, it will immediately notify staff and parents/guardians as we do with any and all communicable illnesses in our buildings/district. If a student or staff member shows respiratory symptoms, we will follow our current practices for handling respiratory illnesses, subject to any additional guidance forthcoming.

The district has infectious disease protocols in place and has been taking steps, such as cleaning and disinfecting throughout its schools, to minimize the spread of viruses and a variety of other illnesses. There are a number of steps that students, staff and community members can take to minimize the spread of all respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, according to the state Department of Health:

        • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Heavily soiled hands should be washed.
        • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
        • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
        • Stay home when you are sick.
        • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
        • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

If you or a family member begin showing symptoms of a respiratory disease and suspect it may be COVID-19, contact your healthcare provider. Before going to your healthcare provider’s office, inform them that a case of COVID-19 is suspected, and follow their advice.

Local health departments will contact schools if a suspected or known COVID-19 case emerges. The district is prepared to work with any affected families.

Families are also encouraged to follow the CDC’s information for travel, available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html. For more information, consider consulting these additional resources:

In addition, New York has established a Novel Coronavirus Hotline, which can provide additional information. Call 1-888-364-3065 with questions or concerns about travel and symptoms. The district will continue to share information as it becomes available.

Please know that, as always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we will remain vigilant in our efforts to help prevent the spread of this illness.

        Sincerely,

        D. Joseph Corr
        Superintendent of Schools

Coach Leslie Archer and Mackenzie Hunter

Shaker Junior High School seventh grader Mackenzie Hunter was honored as the North Colonie Kids Care recipient for February at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Feb. 24. Mackenzie was nominated by her swim coach, Coach Leslie Archer. In January, Mackenzie and her teammates on the modified swim team participated in a one mile swim at Shaker High School to raise money for cystic fibrosis research. Mackenzie raised $945 from family and friends, making her the top fundraiser in the team’s history. The swim team raised a total of $2,200.

“This swim was important to me because a lot of kids with cystic fibrosis can’t just get in a pool and swim and I love that I was able to give back to them and help them,” Mackenzie said. “I’m proud that I was able to swim for everyone who donated and my whole team was proud to swim for the kids with cystic fibrosis.”

Before the swim began, Mackenzie wrote a variety of words and phrases on her back as motivation. Those words and phrases were requested by her family and friends when they donated and kept Mackenzie going as she swam 72 lengths of the pool.
