Dr. Peter McManusFormer North Colonie Assistant Superintendent Dr. Peter McManus passed away last month at the age of 88. Dr. McManus worked for the district for 30 years until his retirement in 1991. After retiring from the district, he went on to teach in the counseling program at Russell Sage and became a consultant for the district as it was developing its counseling programs in the 1990s and 2000s.

“He was a gentle soul and a strong leader,” said Deputy Superintendent Kathleen Skeals. “Dr. McManus was instrumental in a lot of the work that we carry forward today. He was the heart and soul of the district’s mission and shaped the philosophy of many young educators, showcasing what school can and should be for all students.”

Those who knew Dr. McManus said he was a firm yet gentle leader. He was the epitome of a leader and always made sure his employees and the students felt empowered. He would check in with new staff members to see how things were going. His ability to establish relationships with people in the district had an impact on so many.

“Dr. McManus was an integral figure in the district for several decades,” said Superintendent Corr. “Many of the practices he implemented more than 30 years ago are still used today. He was a mentor to me and so many others in the district. I often use the character traits that he instilled in his colleagues and students. His impact on the district will be long-lasting.”

Dr. McManus was known to focus on what students needed to be successful. He made students the number one priority each and every day. He made sure that the district was educating the whole child, not just what was written in a textbook or part of the course curriculum. He also worked to ensure that students would receive social emotional learning, decades before the term was coined by New York State.

“Dr. McManus was very helpful, supportive and willing to listen. I could always count on him to make good decisions for the children in our care,” said former Latham Ridge and Blue Creek Principal Dr. Rose Jackson. “He was famous for always saying ‘they just need the right framework of support.’ He worked to ensure the district provided the necessary support for children in their home school and that every child would grow. My family regarded him with the highest esteem. He was one of the nicest people to have in your working life.”

The Shaker Junior High School PTA established the Peter McManus Staff Recognition Award. The award is given to a junior high staff member who fosters staff excellence and who provides that little bit extra that makes our school so good. The award is a testament to Dr. McManus’ commitment to the district and working to ensure it was constantly evolving and providing the best education for all students.

“He demonstrated principles and protocols of successful leaders,” said former Shaker High School principal Dr. James Jackson. “He had sound intuition and knowledge and was very supportive of all students pursuing their dreams. He made sure the district prepared students for life after school.”

After retiring from North Colonie, Dr. McManus was an advisor and professor in the Russell Sage counseling graduate program. He shaped the minds of a number of future counselors in schools throughout the capital region and beyond.

“To say he is one of the greatest people I’ve known would be an understatement,” said Shaker High School Counselor Mike Bruni. “His impact on the graduate program was just as great as his impact on the district. Half of the school counselors in the area knew him and were impacted by him. I probably would not be at Shaker today if it weren’t for him.”

“He has been instrumental in my career,” said Shaker High School Counselor Arnel Joyner. “When Shaker High School came to him in 1997 and asked him if there were any recent Sage graduates he felt would be perfect for the job, without hesitation he chose me. He always believed in me and encouraged me to be the best I can be. The fact that he has been out of this district for decades and his impact is still felt and I am still meeting individuals whose lives he has touched is a testament to how special he was.”

Five people standing together behind table with masks onWatch out, Food Network! We have some award-winning bakers in our district! Our high school food services team, led by Cook Manager Brenda Rossi, recently learned that they won first place in the Dole® Food Services Fruit Recipe Contest. They won the Northeast category with their winning recipe for the “fruitti-licious stuffed muffin.” The muffin is made with strawberries, pineapple, strawberry yogurt, honey, lime juice, corn bread bowls and whipped topping. The team dubbed it “Shaker High School’s answer to what happens when fruit and yogurt parfaits become old news.”

Each team who entered the contest had to create a recipe using Dole® packaged or frozen fruit in a creative and original way. Entries also needed to include an original recipe title, recipe image, full list of ingredients and step-by-step instructions.

Recipes were judged on the following criteria: creativity, visual appeal, use of Dole® products and originality.

Muffin on a plate with a strawberry and milk behind itThis was the first year the team entered the contest, which they learned about through an e-mail Food Services Director Lisa Ostrowski received. The Shaker High School team was one of 45 submissions.

“We entered the contest because we thought it would be fun to come up with something new, something the students haven’t had, and something nutritional for them to enjoy,” Rossi said. “We were elated to find out we had won!”

The team won 10 cases (360 total) 4 oz. Dole® Fruit Bowls for the school, a $500 food service equipment gift card, a K-12 recipe booklet and a custom chef’s jacket. Congratulations to all!

As always, we are so proud of all of our food service workers and all they do for our school community. They have gone above and beyond throughout the pandemic and we are very grateful for their hard work and dedication.

Dear North Colonie Community,

I hope that you all had a nice Thanksgiving break. As you know, our grades 7-12 students are currently on remote learning through Tuesday, Dec. 8 and they will return to in-person learning on Wednesday, Dec. 9. I had mentioned that we would update you today if there were any updates or changes and at this time, this is still the plan. All students in grades 7-12 will return to campus for in-person learning on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Thank you all for your continued cooperation when we need to make changes on short notice. As always, the health and safety of our students is our number one priority.

North Colonie Partners with United Way to support school community

As I shared earlier this week, the North Colonie PTA Council has partnered with The United Way of the Capital Region to hold a fund drive to support our neighbors and friends. All funds raised will go directly to families and locally-supported programs, right here in our neighborhood. This will be an ongoing drive, however, we recognize the strong need to help families in our community right now, during the holiday season. Holiday donations can be made until Wednesday, Dec. 16. Please join us in this life-changing effort. You can make a donation through the United Way here and to the many of you who have already contributed, thank you for your generosity.

K-12 to stay on remote learning through Dec. 17; students in self-contained special education program to resume on Dec. 10

        $

        0

        Dear North Colonie Community,

I am writing to follow up on the message that I shared with families last night regarding the presumptive positive COVID case in the transportation department. This individual has tested positive, which has created a staffing issue for the district. The individual was last in the district on Friday, Dec. 4. All of the individual’s direct contacts have been identified and placed under a mandatory quarantine.

We do not have a COVID outbreak in the district and this is not considered a district closure. I want to remind families that our school buildings remain a safe place. This is a unique situation. A significant number of our transportation staff members have been placed under quarantine and, as a result, we are simply unable to transport all students in K-12.

With the limited number of drivers who are able to work, we have prioritized the need to transport our special education students in our full-day self-contained programs. The full-day self-contained programs will resume on Thursday, Dec. 10. Transportation schedules for students in these programs will not change.

Additionally, by law, we will also need to transport the students who live in our district and attend private and parochial schools. There will be no transportation on Wednesday, Dec. 9 for these students, but transportation will resume on Thursday, Dec. 10. An additional communication will be sent to families from our transportation department.

All other K-12 students will be moving to remote learning through Thursday, Dec. 17.

We will continue to monitor our staffing ratios and will update families on Monday, Dec. 14 as to schooling plans for Dec. 18-23.

During the time of remote learning, there will be no CYC programs at any of the school buildings.

Please know that this was an incredibly difficult decision that was made in consultation with the Albany County Department of Health. We know the importance of keeping our students in school, however, with the amount of transportation staff impacted, we simply do not have enough staff to transport our students.

Even with the limited number of drivers we have, we will be able to provide meal delivery to those in need. If you are in need of meals for your child during the remote learning period, we will be sharing additional information tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 9.

In addition to this email, families of special education students will receive a follow up communication from Pupil Services Administrators.

Each building principal will also send an additional email later today with more information specific to the individual buildings.

Please remember, a majority of our COVID positive cases have not been due to school spread, but due to spread in the community. I want to thank those of you who have continued to follow guidelines and protocols both in and out of school, because when we do that, it is more likely that we will be able to keep our doors open to provide the supports our students need.

As always, thank you for your understanding during this time. Please reach out with any questions. We are all in this together.

        Sincerely,

        D. Joseph Corr
        Superintendent of Schools

Dear Shaker High School community member,

We are writing to you because your child has failed two or more courses this past quarter. In our current learning environment we know it is challenging for students receiving instruction as an all remote or hybrid learner. Currently, we are working to develop different supports for student instruction at Shaker High School. In order to plan and design the best levels of instructional support we need your feedback.

We are asking you to fill out this survey.

The survey is designed to identify students interested in additional support. Knowing the reasons for student academic challenges will give us the best direction to set up interventions and support instruction for our students. Your willingness to identify the student in the survey will allow us to reach out directly to the student to plan and provide the best intervention for them.

Please take the time to complete the survey. A member of the Shaker High School faculty or staff will follow up with you.

We appreciate your honest responses. Only then can we best meet all our students’ needs.

        Sincerely,

        Richard W. Murphy

Throughout the year, the Names of North Colonie series will highlight those who help our students reach their full potential. It is a chance for the North Colonie community to get to know our teachers, administrators, and staff members on a more personal level.

Nicole FrenchNicole French is in her 17th year as a teacher at Latham Ridge Elementary. Nicole attended The College of Saint Rose for her undergraduate and graduate degrees. As an undergrad, she studied general education (K-6) and minored in psychology. For graduate school, Nicole studied special education. Why did you want to become a teacher?

I’ve wanted to be a teacher since before I entered kindergarten. Maybe it was the large yellow bus that took my older siblings to this mystical place that I wasn’t allowed to attend. Maybe it was the books that teachers handed me that took me to faraway lands. Maybe it was the teacher in high school that never gave up on me. Each year, someone or something had and continues to push me in this profession.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I know it’s cliché, but the students. After a school break, I came back with a “Case of the Mondays”. Ten minutes into homeroom, they had vanished. 11-year olds have a way of making you forget outside life exists.

What are the top 3 items on your bucket list?

        • Say “yes” to every possible opportunity to see the world.
        • Always own a dog from a rescue.
        • Write a book.

What would students be surprised to know about you?

If I could eat sushi every single day, I would.

What do you like to do in your free time?

        Yoga. Reading. Cooking. Eating.

What’s your favorite event that happens during the year and why?

The first day of school. Everyone is on level playing field – fresh faces that are nervous and excited all together. At that moment, everything a teacher wants to do seems possible…tackling the world seems feasible!

        Dear North Colonie Community,

The North Colonie Central School District has confirmed six new cases of COVID-19 in our school community. The cases include:

        • Two individuals associated with the 7-8 program at Shaker High School who were last in the building on Tuesday, Nov. 24. There are no school contacts related to these cases.
        • Three individuals associated with the 9-12 program at Shaker High School who were last in the building on Tuesday, Nov. 24. There are no school contacts related to these cases.
        • An individual associated with the Blue Creek 4-6 intermediate program at the junior high school who was last in the building on Friday, Dec. 4.

We have been in contact with the Albany County Department of Health and identified the Blue Creek individual’s close contacts in the school community. Anyone who has been in close contact with the Blue Creek individual has been directly contacted by a school administrator to discuss quarantine procedures and other health-related instructions. A call from the New York State Department of Health contact tracers will follow.

We continue to work closely with the Albany County Health Department and follow their guidance each time our district has a positive case.

As a reminder, the district has transitioned to fully remote instruction through Thursday, Dec. 17. However, students in full-day special education self-contained programs resumed in-person instruction today. Accordingly, you may have seen school buses on the road today transporting these students to school.

Please reach out to your child’s principal if you have any questions.

        Sincerely,

        D. Joseph Corr
        Superintendent of Schools

SJHS Teacher Mike Moffre and family give back through “HeartsGiving”

Two adults standing with two children behind baskets of foodEach year, for the past five years, Shaker Junior High School Math Teacher Mike Moffre and his family like to give back around Thanksgiving. They assemble full Thanksgiving dinner baskets for people in need as part of the initiative they started in 2016 called “HeartsGiving.”

“We used to shop for and fill Thanksgiving food baskets each year with Master Yang’s Tae Kwon Do when our son, Michael, was attending program there,” Kim Moffre said. “Then, Michael received his black belt he decided not to advance further there. That first year I felt like we were missing something and had the idea to start donating Thanksgiving dinners on our own.”

That is when the wheels started turning and the ideas for “HeartsGiving” began.

“I had the idea six days before Thanksgiving and in that short time we were able to give seven families Thanksgiving dinner that year,” Moffre said. “Each year we have grown significantly. We do this operation out of our garage with the help of so many people and from the donations of family, friends and community members.”

The Moffre family has volunteers who help them shop, assemble and deliver all of the baskets, including their son’s local boy scout troop. Community members either donate the food or they donate gift cards/money for the Moffre’s to shop with.

“This would not be possible without the incredible support of family, friends, neighbors and the community,” Moffre said. “137 families were able to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner this year because of so many people.”

The Moffre family started a Facebook page where followers send them people or families they know who are in need and would not otherwise be able to provide their own Thanksgiving meal. The Moffre’s also work with local organizations to ensure that families in need are receiving these meals.

Each Thanksgiving basket includes at least: an 18 lb. or larger Turkey, two cans of jellied cranberry sauce, bag of potatoes, two boxes of stuffing mix, a bag of carrots, two cans of corn, two cans of green beans, two jars of gravy, one bag of rolls, a bag of clementines or apples, two 2 liter bottles of a drink and two desserts.

“It is important to us to give back to our own school district,” Moffre said. “I am a graduate, my husband is a teacher and both of our kids attend.”

Over the past five years the Moffre’s have delivered 311 Thanksgiving dinners and this year, 46 recipients were North Colonie families.

        Dear North Colonie Community,

As you are aware, it was another tough week with numerous COVID cases in our district. Again, I want to remind families that a majority of our COVID positive cases have not been due to school spread, but due to spread in the community. As we mentioned earlier this week, we are monitoring our staffing ratios and will update families on Monday, Dec. 14 as to schooling plans for Dec. 18-23. Thank you all for your continued understanding and cooperation as we do our best to get to a place where students can come back and learn in our buildings.

        Meals Available During Remote Learning

I want to remind families that meal pick-up and delivery will be available for students in need during the remote learning period. The schedule for next week is as follows:

        • Monday, Dec. 14 & Wednesday, Dec. 16: Meals can be picked up behind Blue Creek Elementary School or behind Shaker High School from 8-8:45 a.m.

Anyone who needs meals delivered must email Food Service Director Lisa Ostrowski at lisaostrowski@ncolonie.org.
