Anyone who has been in close contact with any of these individuals has been directly contacted by a school administrator to discuss quarantine procedures and other health-related instructions. A call from the New York State Department of Health contact tracers will follow.

We continue to work closely with the Albany County DOH and follow their guidance each time our district has a positive case. Read more information on quarantine protocols and isolation protocols from the Albany County DOH.

As a reminder, the district has transitioned to fully remote instruction through Thursday, Dec. 17, with the exception of our students in our full-day self-contained programs.

Please reach out to your child’s principal if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

D. Joseph Corr

Consent form for student COVID testing – A message from the superintendent

$

Dear North Colonie Families,

As part of his winter strategy for confronting COVID-19, Governor Cuomo announced a “micro-cluster initiative” designed to identify and stop the spread of the virus. Using data related to daily COVID testing and hospitalization rates from state and local departments of health, the Governor’s office will be designating regions of the state and the schools that operate in those regions as red, orange, or yellow zones. Each of the zones comes with requirements; mandated school-based COVID-19 testing is required for schools in yellow, orange or red zones to continue with in-person instruction. More information about the zones and corresponding requirements can be found here.

In North Colonie, we have been preparing for the testing requirement should the Governor designate our schools or district in a yellow, orange, or red zone. Through a partnership with Albany County Department of Health and the New York State Department of Health, the district has secured 3,200 rapid tests to screen our in-person students, faculty, and staff for COVID-19 and we are completing the training necessary in order to offer those tests on-site.

If we are in a yellow zone, we would need to test 20% of our students, staff, and faculty who are randomly selected from those who have given their consent within a two week period. If the results show that the school’s infection rate is less than the region’s, the school does not need to conduct further testing if we remain in a yellow zone.

If we are in an orange zone, we have one month to test 20% of our students, staff, and faculty who are randomly selected from those who have given their consent. Once a person has been tested, they will not be tested again unless we have multiple rounds and have exhausted the total pool of people to be tested.

If we are in a red zone, we have one month to test 30% of our students, staff, and faculty who are selected from those who have given their consent. Once a person has been tested, they will not be tested again unless we have multiple rounds and have exhausted the total pool of people to be tested.

It is important to note, if we are unable to test the required 20% or 30%, the district will have to transition to remote learning until we can reach the required number.

In North Colonie, we will only be testing those in-person students, faculty, and staff who consent to the testing. Students and staff members who have given consent will be randomly selected for a test. The rapid test we have is the BinaxNow rapid antigen test, which shows results in 15 minutes. The nasal swab test will be administered by registered nurses.

  • Watch a video to learn more about the test here.
  • A video demonstration of the test being administered can be seen here.

If your child is selected for a test, you will be notified via email by the building principal at least 48 hours prior to the test administration. On the day that a student is tested, he or she will be greeted by school personnel at their scheduled time and they will remain in the testing location until results are available. If your child is randomly chosen to be tested, the results will be shared with a parent/guardian the day of the test. If your child’s test result is negative, you will receive an email from the building principal at the end of the day. If your child’s test result is positive, you will receive a phone call from the building principal immediately. All test results will remain confidential.

If a family prefers to have their child tested outside of school, test results must be provided to the school within 7 days from the date of specimen collection. The specimen collection must be done after the date that the geographic area in which the school is located was designated an orange or red zone.

Please let us know if you give consent by filling out this form. All forms must be completed by Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Translated forms can be found here and dropped off at the district office.

Families can also follow the instructions posted here on how to translate a Google Form into any language available on Google.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we navigate the Governor’s mandates and this testing process. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school principal.

Sincerely,

D. Joseph Corr
Superintendent of Schools

Plate of chocolate chip cookiesShaker High School students in the Introduction to Business I classes recently put their knowledge and skills to the test in the annual Business Cookie Challenge!

The Cookie Challenge is a friendly competition where students work in teams to manage a cookie company. After learning about pricing and supply and demand in class, the teams came together to make decisions about their company’s production quantity and selling price, based on various information presented each week that impacted demand.

The goal of each team was to earn the highest profit for their company. The following teams earned the highest profit in each class cohort:

Mrs. Randall’s Class:

  • Crispy Cooks – managed by Paige Kruegler, Gia Patel and Tori Wasula
  • ACookie4U – managed by Khalid Hassen, Niko Pascazio and Toby Wasserman
  • Bhocolate Bhip Bookies – managed by Brandon Bhola, Craig Foshee and Maddox Hoffman-Borawski
  • Baker of America – managed by Rishi Patel, Luigi Riggione and Kirari Yokoyama
  • Aaaaawesome Cookie Company – managed by Brian Li, Imran Shukralla and Dean Vitas
  • A Better Cookie – managed by Miles Ehrlich, Kenny Moss and Ammar Singaporewala

Ms. Squadere’s Class:

  • Ansar’s Bakery – managed by Savera Ansar and Lucy Rappazzo
  • A Cookie Company – managed by Thomas Cox, Jack Gialanella and Steven Zhao
  • Aaaaaah Cookies – managed by Connor Bunkoff and Beau Cunningham
  • Aardwolf – managed by Salman Khan, Markus Rankins and Michael Tong

SHS Business Teacher Ms. Squadere was introduced to the challenge by her mentor, Michelle Frisone. Squadere then shared the challenge with Mrs. Randall when she started at SHS and now both classes take part. Each year, the competition is a highlight for the students and they always talk about how fun it is.

“Students are challenged, they have fun, and they apply what they learned to make smart business decisions as a team,” said Shaker Business Teacher Antoinette Randall.

Here is what some of the students had to say about the challenge:

“I thought the Cookie Challenge was a fun and engaging way to learn about business and supply and demand. I learned a lot about reading the market to see if the demand was going to be high or low. I learned not to make more product than you were going to sell. Overall, during the Cookie Challenge I learned a lot and it was super fun. I think the Cookie Challenge should be used next year.” -Estelle Porter (Grade 9)

“I thought the cookie challenge was a fun challenge. It was a good competition and at the same time a good learning activity. I learned how to manage a business during this activity.” -Francesca Logrippo (Grade 10)

“The cookie challenge was a fun and competitive way to bring the class together and get to know some of our classmates that we may not talk to on a regular basis. Also by participating in the cookie challenge, you get a feel for how to run a business and how to set the right standards for production.” -Tori Wasula (Grade 11)

“I enjoyed this activity. I learned how to change prices and quantity based on events going on and consumer interests.” Aidan Garland (Grade 9)

Keep an eye out! You may just happen to see one of these teams on the Food Network’s “Christmas Cookie Challenge” one day! Great job to all!

Dear North Colonie Families,

I hope everyone is staying warm and safe following the storm. It’s been a very busy time in the district, with many changes and tough decisions. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our families for their continued support and understanding as we navigate these new challenges. Please know we are doing our absolute best to give your child the best possible educational experience. Your help and cooperation throughout this time has been amazing and I want to thank you for that.

COVID Consent Form for Students

Earlier this week, we shared a COVID testing consent form that families will need to fill out by Wednesday, Dec. 23. By filling out this form, you can let the district know if you consent to having your child tested for COVID-19 should we fall into a color zone designated by the state. You can find the form and read more about testing here. Thank you to those who have already completed the form. As a reminder, we will only be testing in-person students, faculty, and staff who consent to the testing.

Health Attestation Update

While students in grades K-12 students are currently on remote learning, the district is only sending daily attestation messages to students in our self-contained special education program, since they are still learning in-person. We will resume sending attestation messages to all students on Monday, Jan. 4.

Bison Blowup Bonanza –  POSTPONED

Unfortunately, due to major snow removal needed on campus, the Bison Blowup Bonanza originally scheduled for this Saturday, Dec. 19 has been postponed until Monday, Dec. 28.

Be sure to mark your calendars! You won’t want to miss this magical holiday drive-thru hosted by SHS Student Government. The SJHS/SHS campuses will be filled with festive inflatables and holiday lights! It will run from 5-7 p.m. and you can enter at the junior high school entrance. Please consider making a monetary donation or bringing an item for the Shaker Food Pantry. Thank you for your support!

Weekly Boost

  • Shaker High School students in the Introduction to Business I classes recently put their knowledge and skills to the test in the annual Business Cookie Challenge! The Cookie Challenge is a friendly competition where students work in teams to manage a cookie company. Read more about the challenge here.
  • After recently reading a story about a soup kitchen and the homeless, Southgate second grader Niko Spadoni and his fifth grade brother Rocco Spadoni felt the nudge to do something good. The brothers decided to put together “care bags” filled with food to pass out to the homeless. After receiving some attention on Facebook, WRGB Channel 6 reached out to do a story on the pair and their acts of kindness. You can watch it here. Great job, Niko and Rocco!

Again, thank you for your continued partnership. I hope you have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

D. Joseph Corr
Superintendent of Schools

We need YOUR help! We’re down to the final two district logos! Which one will win?! Now is the time vote!

In October, we began the process of rebranding the North Colonie Central School District. We felt it was important to develop a new logo that truly embraces who we are as a school community.

After surveying multiple groups within the school community on their thoughts about the district and its core values, we used the results to design two logos that reflect those values and our district as a whole.

Please take some time to vote for your favorite logo by Monday, Jan. 4 at 8 a.m. We will share the winning logo with the school community the week of Jan. 4. Thank you!

Please view a short video message from Supt. Corr

    Dear North Colonie Families,

As we come to a close on 2020, I want to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your support throughout this difficult year. We have been challenged and we have overcome many obstacles, and through it all we have stuck together as a community. Without your support, we would not have gotten this far. Thank you for all you have done, all you do, and all you will continue to do. I hope you are all able to find some time to relax and recharge during this holiday break.

As we head into the break, I want to share some good news with you. Two North Colonie students were recently recognized in the Capital District 2020 Chopin Competition, a prestigious regional piano competition. SHS junior Minyi Chen was named the Chopin Master Winner, and Sixth Grade Southgate student Adam Judson was named Chopin Novice Runner-Up. Their performances can be viewed here and they are amazing! Congratulations, Minyi and Adam!

I know I continue to say this and I don’t think I can say it enough – I encourage you all to remain vigilant throughout the holiday break. Please be mindful of gatherings, wearing masks and continue to practice social distancing. How we all live our lives outside of school greatly impacts what happens inside our school buildings. We are looking forward to seeing our students back in-person on January 4 and we believe that if we all stay vigilant throughout the break, we will be able to do so.

In the event we receive any positive cases over the break, we will not send daily updates. Instead, we will send a recap of any cases on Monday, Jan. 4, similar to what we did over the Thanksgiving break. I know there has been a great deal of communication from my office since the beginning of the school year, and I do not want to overwhelm you with more emails during the holiday season. Of course, if anything pressing arises, we will be in touch.

Once again, thank you for your partnership, your faith in us, and your support as we have navigated through this difficult time. While this holiday season may look different for us all this year, I sincerely hope you are still able to find some peace and joy. Let’s hope we can all turn the page for a healthier and happier new year.

    Happy Holidays,

    D. Joseph Corr
    Superintendent of Schools

All North Colonie schools to reopen on Monday, Jan. 4

    Dear North Colonie Community,

I hope that you all have had a nice and relaxing holiday break. As you may have seen in the media on Saturday, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy said that he recommended all schools in the county go on pause. Although it was reported that a meeting would take place with superintendents on Sunday, in actuality, all Albany County school superintendents met with representatives from the county, as well as Albany County Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen on Saturday evening. In the meeting, it was clear that while the decision to reopen remains a local decision, all available data indicates that the rate of virus transmission in schools is low, and therefore, it is safe to reopen. County Executive McCoy released an additional statement last night following the meeting, which you can view here.

The purpose of this message is to affirm that our schools will reopen for in-person learning tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 4. Unless staffing shortages require all-remote learning or there is evidence of broader virus transmission in schools, our schools will remain open for in-person learning. We will continue to work with our public health partners to monitor all available information, including how the increased infection rates relate to schools. At school, all of our health and safety precautions remain fully in effect.

There is no easy one-size-fits-all decision, whether from district to district or family to family. It is incumbent upon us to look at the data before us and make the most informed decision we can with the evidence available. Based on this review and after consultation with Dr. Whalen, we have seen that schools can open safely amid this pandemic. In addition to the national data on school safety during this pandemic, Dr. Whalen said “schools are controlled environments, and the schools in this region have done a really good job on infection control.” The superintendents of the Capital Region BOCES area are united in our belief that schools are the best place for children to be during the day.

We realize, however, that some families may prefer to keep their children home in this period immediately following the holidays. If you wish to switch your child to remote learning for the next two weeks, please contact your child’s principal by noon on Monday. If you choose this option, please know that work will be posted on Google Classroom for Monday. A more detailed plan for the two weeks of remote instruction will be sent home by your building principal on Monday afternoon. This plan will include the means by which we will provide teacher support for the students who are learning at home. The two weeks will not merely consist of asynchronous work posted in a Google Classroom.

As of right now, the North Colonie Central School district has confirmed 23 positive cases in our school community since Wednesday, Dec. 23. The information on these cases and any additional cases will be shared once we return to school on Monday. As always, anyone who was impacted has already been contacted.

Certainly, there is hope on the horizon with the distribution of the vaccine, but we recognize the upcoming weeks will be challenging. Please remember to stay safe, wear a mask, practice social distancing and be mindful of who you are gathering with.

I want to thank you all for your continued support and understanding. I also want to thank those of you who have reached out to express your opinions and concerns on either side of our reopening decision. The support and gratitude you have shown us is so valued and appreciated.

We are all in this together, and we all have to do our part to slow the spread of this virus.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school principal.

    Sincerely,

    D. Joseph Corr
    Superintendent of Schools
